From medical wearable devices and smart homes to industrial automation and embodied robots, edge AI, with its unique advantages of low latency, high security, and high reliability, has brought new solutions for AI deployment in many industries. Massive AI applications directly complete real-time perception, inference, and decision-making locally on terminal devices. As a key carrier for edge AI deployment, embedded chips represented by Microcontroller Units (MCUs) are ushering in a new round of intelligent upgrades. However, delegating AI capabilities to resource-constrained edge nodes requires overcoming severe challenges in multiple dimensions such as cost, power consumption, and security. How to achieve system scalability in the ultimate balance of computing power and power consumption, and how to provide solid technical support in complex and diverse AI application scenarios? With these questions, Zhidx had an in-depth exchange with Vinay Agarwal, Vice President and General Manager of the MSP Microcontroller Business at Texas Instruments (TI).
Relying on decades of profound accumulation in Digital Signal Processing (DSP) and embedded systems, TI has created an end-to-end full-stack embedded edge AI solution from hardware accelerators and security architecture to software development ecosystem through a complete product portfolio covering microcontrollers, processors, wireless connectivity, and millimeter-wave radar. From TI's strategic layout, core technological innovation, and ecosystem construction logic in the edge AI field, to TI's in-depth thinking on the future era of physical AI and Agents, we can see that TI is empowering the key technological ecosystem in the era of the edge AI explosion.
01. Edge AI Explosion Sparks Computing Power Paradigm Shift Security and Scalability Become Industry Focus
Currently, the embedded field is undergoing a deep technological transformation, and users are putting forward increasingly stringent requirements for the intelligent experience of various devices. The demand for AI to be "more, faster, better, and cheaper" drives the industry towards "computing near the data source," making the value of edge AI increasingly prominent. Running AI at the edge means running models locally at the source of data collection without uploading massive raw data to the cloud. Devices can not only achieve sub-millisecond real-time response but also significantly reduce system communication power consumption and ensure the local closed-loop privacy and security of sensitive data. However, running complex algorithms near the data source means that microcontrollers and microprocessors must provide multiplied computing performance under an extremely narrow power budget. From the evolution of process technology to the innovation of chip micro-architecture, a paradigm shift in computing power has already unfolded.
From TI's perspective, in the process of edge AI deployment, the industry mainly faces two core challenges. One is the cybersecurity and data privacy challenge. As the edge takes over more and more critical decisions, cybersecurity and data privacy have become the core focus of the industry. Running AI models locally means that chips need to guard against security threats such as reverse engineering, model theft, and malicious code injection. How to provide high-level hardware protection from the underlying chip level while improving the model running speed is one of the directions of industry technology iteration. The second is the cross-node scalability challenge. The application scenarios of edge AI present extremely high diversity and fragmentation characteristics.
From power-sensitive sensors that respond once every few tens of milliseconds to high-computing-power platforms that process high-resolution multi-channel video streams, the requirements for computing power, energy efficiency, and cost vary greatly across different edge nodes. Developing independent software and hardware systems for different applications will bring huge R&D reconstruction costs. The market urgently needs a scalable architecture that can run through the low-end, mid-range, and high-end, achieving software and hardware compatibility and seamless smooth migration. Facing these challenges, TI's strategic core lies in laying out hardware architecture and software ecosystem in advance. By building a highly scalable product portfolio and full-process development tools, TI lowers the development threshold and deployment cost of edge AI.
02. No "Perfect Chip", Consolidating System-Level Solutions Edge AI Capabilities Integrated into Multi-Dimensional Product Lines for Full-Stack Expansion
In TI's view, there is no "perfect chip" on the market that can meet all edge applications. A true system-level solution should be a product portfolio covering different computing power nodes, process nodes, memory configurations, package forms, and cost structures, allowing engineers to choose on demand according to specific scenarios. TI has fully integrated edge AI capabilities into multiple embedded product lines including microcontrollers, processors, wireless connectivity, and millimeter-wave radar.
In the core MCU field, TI has created a complete product line covering general-purpose and high-performance real-time control, offering 25 package options, and deeply integrating high-precision analog front-ends with dedicated AI accelerators. As an entry-level product, the MSPM0 focuses on the integration of high-precision analog components, responsible for high-fidelity physical world data perception and sensor signal acquisition, and is widely used in consumer, industrial, data center, and automotive electronics. The MSPM0G5187 integrates TI's TinyEngine Neural Processing Unit (NPU), bringing intelligent decision-making capabilities to power-constrained and cost-sensitive micro nodes. It can achieve advanced AI functions such as keyword detection, gesture recognition, and device predictive maintenance under low power consumption, breaking the traditional perception that "AI belongs only to high-end applications."
The AM13E23019 is the industry's first product to simultaneously integrate a high-performance Arm Cortex-M33 core, TinyEngine NPU, and advanced real-time control architecture on a single MCU. For multi-motor control systems, designers can implement complex control algorithms and AI predictive diagnostics on a single chip without external independent AI chips or external logic components, reducing the system Bill of Materials (BOM) cost by up to 30%.
The C2000 real-time control MCU series includes the classic C28 core and the latest generation C29 core, targeting applications such as power transmission, photovoltaic inverters, and high-end motor control. Newly added derivative models supporting edge AI can seamlessly embed AI fault prediction and dynamic parameter optimization algorithms in high-frequency real-time control loops. The AM6x series has stronger multi-core processing capabilities, targeting complex image acquisition and visual perception scenarios. For edge inference scenarios with higher computing power requirements, TI's processor product line provides solutions that combine high-deterministic real-time performance, industrial-grade reliability, and high energy efficiency. These include the AM2754/AM62D optimized for high-quality automotive audio, In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) systems, and acoustic signal processing; and the AM62L, which focuses on mainstream industrial scenarios such as industrial Human-Machine Interface (HMI) panels, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), and motion control, achieving the optimal balance of computing performance, power budget, and cost.
The AM62A/AM67A/AM68A/AM69A integrates dedicated high-computing-power AI acceleration units, covering computing power from low to hundreds of TOPS. Coupled with mature AI toolchains, Software Development Kits (SDKs), and model deployment frameworks, it can accelerate the porting and deployment of visual AI models. In terms of wireless connectivity, TI can provide full-range wireless connectivity solutions including Wi-Fi, Classic Bluetooth, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), and Sub-1GHz.
In the field of millimeter-wave radar, TI provides a highly integrated single-chip millimeter-wave radar sensor product portfolio in the 77GHz and 60GHz frequency bands. With full-stack hardware support, TI has achieved edge AI deployment in multiple industries. For example, in the wearable healthcare field, low-power MCUs supporting edge AI have reduced electrocardiogram data processing latency by 10 times. The high-resolution recording and transmission functions, enabled only when necessary, multiply the battery life of wearable medical devices. In smart building automation, based on a single traditional Passive Infrared (PIR) sensor and combined with scalable edge AI algorithms on the MCU, the recognition accuracy of multiple motion sources can be improved to over 98%. In the field of edge AI digital recognition, TI's solution can directly run micro image recognition algorithms on compact low-power devices, achieving local real-time recognition of meter readings and dashboard numbers.
03. Independently Decoupled AI Computing Engine is the Killer Feature Focusing on Both Functional Safety and Information Security
The rich and solid hardware matrix has consolidated the foundation. However, to efficiently run AI models on extremely constrained embedded chips, further innovations must be made in the underlying chip architecture and security design. In the edge MCU field, traditional hardware solutions often attempt to embed the NPU directly into the MCU. This over-integration method seems to improve integration but actually greatly reduces the configuration flexibility of the chip and is prone to causing system performance bottlenecks when the CPU and NPU compete for bus resources. Based on decades of DSP technology precipitation, TI has developed a proprietary hardware accelerator—the TinyEngine NPU. Its original design intention is to push the balance between computing power and power consumption to the limit. Compared with traditional solutions, the TinyEngine NPU has an independently decoupled architecture, which is more efficient and secure. Its core innovation lies in the adoption of a separated architecture that decouples the computing unit from the CPU core. As an independent dedicated hardware accelerator, the TinyEngine NPU does not need to wake up the main CPU when executing inference tasks; only the NPU completes real-time computing and pattern matching. Compared with similar MCUs without accelerators, the TinyEngine NPU reduces inference latency by up to 90 times and reduces single inference energy consumption by over 120 times, while significantly reducing the occupation of flash memory space.
Since the AI model is compiled and directly loaded and run in the dedicated hardware accelerator rather than the public flash memory area of traditional microcontrollers, the accelerator itself naturally forms a hardware isolation barrier. Attackers cannot steal model weights through conventional memory reading or buffer overflow methods, creating a solid security buffer layer for edge AI. The final output accuracy of the AI model is directly related to the quality of the input data. If the analog signal collected by the front-end sensor is distorted or noisy, no matter how powerful the back-end AI algorithm is, it will be of no help. TI's core advantage lies in the organic combination of high-performance analog technologies such as high-precision ADCs, low-drift Op-Amps (Operational Amplifiers), and high-speed comparators with computing cores. This closed-loop link of "high-precision analog input—efficient computing power processing—precise control output" ensures the reliability of the overall decision-making of the edge AI system. In terms of security focused by edge AI, TI believes that the security defense line must be built firmly at the architectural level. TI divides security into two complementary dimensions: functional safety and information security.
Functional safety is the "bottom-line attribute" of the system. Functional safety is not an optional marketing selling point, but a bottom line that must be strictly observed in chip R&D. TI integrates functional safety design throughout the entire life cycle of chip R&D. From ADCs to high-end ECDCs, as well as MCUs used in automobiles, functional safety is a basic requirement. In terms of information security, TI's chips are not only supported by Arm's TrustZone technology, but also deeply embed multi-level hardware security mechanisms in the MCU architecture. It adds encryption libraries, security guarantees at different levels of memory, and different security accelerators, which can help customers develop applications with more secure IP hardware during the firmware development process.
04. Full-Stack Ecosystem Empowers Developers with Zero Threshold Software and Hardware Collaboration Accelerates Edge AI Deployment
The deployment of edge AI and the improvement of AI application experience have never been a "solo show" of hardware; a perfect software ecosystem is a key factor in promoting the large-scale popularization of edge AI. By deeply integrating the development toolchain, TI balances the ease of use of its own software ecosystem with the compatibility of popular open-source ecosystems in the industry. For customers who already have AI models in specific fields, they can directly import their models, and model retraining is supported. The application side fine-tunes parameters according to specific MCU hardware characteristics to quickly complete adaptation. For customers lacking in-depth AI development experience, TI provides a free and open Edge AI Studio cloud/desktop development tool. This tool provides a visual interface to help engineers complete high-quality sensor data collection and directly supports mainstream open-source frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, and ONNX, realizing automatic training, optimization, quantization, and one-click compilation and deployment of models.
For customers with strong fine-tuning capabilities and mature models, they can directly compile the model into the hardware to quickly take advantage of the hardware accelerator. What TI provides to customers is not just suitable hardware, but also the empowerment of the entire ecosystem, allowing customers to choose TI's products according to actual needs in their business. TI's CCStudio development ecosystem integrates top AI Agents and models, accelerating the process of code development, system configuration, and debugging. The AI Agent can deeply learn TI's massive Datasheets, SDK API documents, and historical reference designs. It can not only provide intelligent completion and system parameter configuration guidance during code writing but also assist developers in real-time code debugging and error troubleshooting, greatly shortening the product R&D cycle.
TI's official website has opened a large amount of free software and hardware resources, including complete Software Development Kits (SDKs), schematic designs, and system-level reference designs, providing developers with a one-stop out-of-the-box experience of "hardware reference boards + software source code."
05. Consolidating Basic Technologies on One Hand and Achieving Independent and Controllable Vertical Integration on the Other Co-building the Ecosystem for the Agent Era
Looking at the industry, the competition in the embedded chip field is extremely fierce. The explosion of edge AI is not only a contest of chip computing power and architecture but also a lasting test of semiconductor enterprises' manufacturing capacity, supply chain resilience, and long-term service commitments. TI has obvious advantages in Integrated Device Manufacturing (IDM) and independent controllability. Unlike many chip design companies that adopt the Fabless foundry model, TI's embedded microcontroller and processor products are all manufactured in TI's own wafer fabs and packaging and testing factories.
Through refined control of its own process nodes and packaging and testing processes, TI can significantly reduce the uncertainty in the intermediate foundry links and optimize the cost structure, enabling edge AI chips to have strong cost competitiveness while maintaining high performance. At the same time, the independent controllability of the whole process also ensures the stable supply of chip products, making it more capable and flexible in responding to rapid changes in market demand. In addition, customers in fields such as industrial, automotive, power, and medical equipment have extremely stringent requirements for chip supply cycles. TI commits to providing long-term life and supply continuity guarantees for its products, effectively solving customers' worries about supply chain interruptions and chip discontinuations.
Facing the emerging market demands in recent years such as humanoid robots and high-density data centers, TI has demonstrated rapid response and adaptation capabilities, which is inseparable from its continuous polishing of underlying core technologies over the years. For example, in high-difficulty parkour and high jump of robots, many of the technologies involved do not start from scratch. TI originally has many excellent technological accumulations and makes rapid responses according to new needs; many electronic heat dissipation and thermal management required by data centers, and even those evolved based on air conditioning technology, have decades of profound accumulation in these fields for TI.
This solid basic technology capability, high degree of independent controllability, and the ability to quickly migrate underlying technologies to emerging scenarios have built an insurmountable competitive barrier for TI. Looking ahead to the next stage of edge AI, devices will not only be terminals that receive instructions but will also play the role of physical interactive interfaces connecting humans and the digital world. In this evolutionary trend, Agents are playing an increasingly critical role. In TI's view, future embedded systems will be able to seamlessly access various AI Agents. Changes in machine behavior will no longer solely rely on engineers writing code line by line, but will achieve autonomous system behavior adjustment through real-time instructions issued by Agents. On the R&D side, Agents can automatically parse chip architectures, consult Datasheets and design examples, help developers generate driver code, configure registers, and complete system verification, realizing truly seamless engineering design. In these directions, there are still many challenges for the whole industry to overcome.
06. Conclusion: In the AI Era Software and Hardware Collaboration Reconstructs the Embedded System Paradigm
The explosion of edge AI is not only a sinking of computing power but also a reconstruction of the embedded system paradigm. Facing multiple challenges such as latency, power consumption, security, scalability, and supply chain stability, TI, with its decades of accumulated technological advantages and precise insights into the development trend of edge AI, has provided a full-stack edge AI solution from hardware accelerators and security architecture to software development ecosystem.
From the innovative breakthrough of the TinyEngine NPU to the accelerated assistance of CCStudio in the development ecosystem, TI is significantly lowering the development threshold for edge AI, making AI no longer exclusive to high-end systems and accelerating the empowerment of the intelligent upgrade of terminal devices in thousands of industries.
