In August 2026, BYD exported 189,466 NEVs (New Energy Vehicles), a year-on-year increase of 134.6%. From January to August, cumulative exports reached 1,157,954 units (approximately 1.158 million units), accounting for 43.4% of the group's cumulative sales of 2.668 million units. This means that for every 10 vehicles sold, more than 4 were shipped overseas. Where did these vehicles go?

BYD exported 189,466 NEVs in August 2026, up 134.6% year-on-year. This is the official export figure, and a large portion of these vehicles were shipped out.

However, according to retail statistics, BYD sold 79,827 units overseas in August across the 49 markets we monitor.

I) South America Acts as the Ballast, with Brazil Taking the Lion's Share

In the Americas, 27,655 units were sold, accounting for 34.6%. Brazil alone accounted for 25,150 units, which, according to the statistical scope, made up 30% of the total global overseas sales. Argentina sold 1,389 units, Uruguay 841, Chile 200, and Colombia has not yet ramped up its volume.

BYD's strategy in Latin America has taken shape, relying on Brazil's localized production capacity and tariff advantages to boost volume, while neighboring countries follow suit. Note: BYD Mexico has not reported data, so the exact figure remains unclear.

II) Europe is the Core Market, Led by Germany, the UK, and Spain

In Europe, 25,386 units were sold, accounting for 31.8% and covering 27 markets. Germany (5,256), the UK (3,867), and Spain (3,191) are the top three, followed closely by Italy (2,579) and France (2,162). Poland reached 1,452 units, and Belgium surpassed 1,000. In Northern Europe, Norway (736) and the Netherlands (680) also showed strong performance.

The European market is fragmented but has a stable base, making it the most stable segment for BYD's overseas expansion. Objectively speaking, among Chinese automakers, BYD's EVs are subject to the lowest tariff tier, allowing it to easily surpass SAIC Motor's years of strategic presence in Europe.

III) Asia-Pacific Region Advances on Two Fronts

In Southeast Asia, 12,215 units were sold, accounting for 15.3%. Indonesia was the absolute main force with 7,889 units, followed by Singapore (1,100) and Malaysia (635).

Thailand recorded 2,591 units, which is also the most story-worthy market this period: in January, BYD sold 12,791 units in Thailand, once closing in on Toyota, but in August, it dropped to only 2,591 units, a decline of nearly 80%. As subsidies in Thailand phase out, the consumption tax on imported EVs is proposed to increase from 10% to over 32%, and localization rate requirements are tightened simultaneously, putting collective pressure on Chinese brands in Thailand. However, looking at the cumulative period from January to August, BYD's total of 31,772 units still ranks first among Chinese brands and fourth across all brands (Toyota 170,499, Honda 51,631, Isuzu 45,863). The Dolphin (9,668 units) and Atto 3 (8,771 units) remain in the top ten of the cumulative model rankings.

Oceania recorded 8,492 units, almost entirely contributed by Australia, while New Zealand remains at the level of a few hundred units. East Asia, South Asia, and Central Asia totaled 3,393 units, with South Korea accounting for the majority at 3,002 units. Japan recorded 391 units, and India has not yet scaled up.

IV) Middle East and Africa are Early Battlegrounds

In the Middle East, 2,077 units were sold, basically concentrated in Israel. In Africa, 609 units were sold, with South Africa taking the lead, while the rest of the markets have not yet been fully rolled out.

Summary: The landscape of BYD's overseas expansion features Latin America and Europe as dual engines, contributing 66%; Southeast Asia and Oceania serve as incremental pools, supported by Indonesia and Australia, with Thailand's policy variables requiring close monitoring; the Middle East and Africa are still expanding their networks, with small volumes but clear directions.
