Three Major Trends for Display Industry: Display-Computing Integration, Ecosystem Competition and Shift from Followership to Leadership

by zhongguodianzibao·September 24, 2026

The release of the "15th Five-Year Plan for the Development of Electronic Information Manufacturing Industry" (hereinafter referred to as the "Plan") has outlined a new blueprint for China's electronic information industry. In the section on "Accelerating the Innovative Development of Consumer Electronics," it explicitly proposes deploying key technologies such as spatial computing, display optics, and sensing and interaction, and breaking through critical components like high-end audio and video processing chips and display modules. For the display industry, this represents not only a significant opportunity but also a mission of the times.

The display serves as the "first interface" of the digital world and the core entry point for human-machine interaction. From smartphones to smart cockpits, and from large-screen cinemas to AR glasses, over 70% of the information acquired by humans comes from vision. The strength of the display industry is directly related to the global competitiveness of consumer electronics and the solidity of the foundation for the digital economy.

After years of dedicated development, China has become a key pillar in the global display industry—leading the world in panel production capacity, astonishing the world with LED displays, and accelerating breakthroughs in display driver ICs. However, we must clearly recognize that shortcomings still exist in high-end display chips, core materials, and advanced equipment. The "Plan" emphasizes "enhancing the supply capacity across the entire value chain," which is precisely aimed at unblocking the critical pathways from key components to application scenarios.

In my view, over the next five years, the display industry will exhibit three major development trends:

First, the deep integration of display and computing. As AI terminals and spatial computing emerge, they are redefining the display—it is no longer a passive output window, but an intelligent node integrating sensing, computing, and interaction. Display chips will also evolve from "driver devices" to "computing nodes." Second, the competition in the industrial chain is shifting from single-point competition to ecosystem competition. No single enterprise can stand alone; panels, chips, materials, terminals, and applications must advance collaboratively. The "Plan" proposes "strengthening industrial chain synergy," which addresses the core of industrial upgrading.

Third, China's display industry is transitioning from "following" to "leading." We are already leading in certain fields, and keeping pace in more frontier areas. The 15th Five-Year Plan period will be a critical window for China's display industry to establish its global competitive advantage.

We are well aware that the "chip shortage" was once a pain point for China's display industry, and overcoming core technological barriers is the responsibility of our generation. Chipone adheres to independent innovation and has achieved breakthroughs in multiple niche segments; at the same time, we are actively deploying next-generation display technologies to reserve capabilities for the era of spatial computing.

Looking ahead to the "15th Five-Year Plan," I have three insights:

First, adhere to long-termism. The display industry requires long-term accumulation to achieve breakthroughs. Tackling core technologies demands the perseverance of "sharpening a sword for ten years," remaining untempted by short-term interests and unshaken by cyclical fluctuations.

Second, deepen collaborative innovation. Upstream and downstream enterprises should break down barriers and engage in in-depth cooperation in standard setting, technological research, and scenario deployment, building an independent, controllable, open, and win-win industrial ecosystem.

Third, embrace globalization. The development of China's display industry cannot be separated from the world, and the progress of the global display industry simultaneously needs China. We must enhance our competitiveness through openness and achieve new leaps through cooperation.
