Gasgoo News - According to foreign media reports, Canadian auto parts supplier Magna has successfully secured a new project from a European automaker to supply a driver and occupant monitoring system for the automaker’s vehicle platform.
The system utilizes cameras integrated into the rearview mirror area along with supporting software to monitor the driver's status and occupant behavior in real time. Magna stated that this technology not only enhances driving safety but also reduces the number of exposed hardware devices inside and outside the vehicle.
Magna also revealed that the product adopts a hidden camera solution within the mirror, allowing automakers to add monitoring functions without redesigning the instrument panel or other interior components. Meanwhile, the system is compatible with software-defined vehicle (SDV) platforms, which rely heavily on centralized software architecture and over-the-air (OTA) update technology.
Matteo Del Sorbo, President of Magna's Mechatronics, Mirrors, and Lighting division, stated, "This contract signing confirms the industry trend that driver monitoring technology is entering a phase of large-scale adoption."
Magna introduced that the product integrates sensing, lighting, electronics, and software into a unified rearview mirror system, which can be flexibly adapted to different vehicle platforms and meet market demands across various regions.
As automakers continuously upgrade advanced driver assistance features, coupled with the successive introduction of stricter safety regulations by various countries, the installation rate of driver monitoring systems is steadily rising.
Magna has not disclosed the name of the European automaker it is partnering with, nor has it revealed the specific amount of the order.
