BYD Q3 2026 Net Profit Hits ¥10B: Overseas Sales Fuel Growth Amid Margin & Cash Pressures

by zhinengqiche·November 2, 2026

Net profit of CNY 10 billion in three months marks BYD's strongest quarter since the beginning of this year.

On the evening of October 29, BYD released its Q3 2026 financial report:

◎ Operating revenue was CNY 221.488 billion, a year-on-year increase of 13.59%;

◎ Net profit attributable to shareholders was CNY 10.020 billion, a year-on-year increase of 28.08%.

For the first three quarters:

◎ Operating revenue was CNY 566.304 billion, a mere year-on-year increase of 0.01%;

◎ Net profit attributable to shareholders was CNY 22.345 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 4.24%.

During the same period, inventory increased by CNY 83.157 billion compared to the beginning of the year, accounts receivable increased by CNY 19.468 billion, and monetary funds decreased by CNY 44.437 billion.

Comparing BYD with Geely, Chery, Changan, Seres, and JAC reveals the impact of scale in the automotive industry.

Behind the CNY 10 billion profit, BYD faces three specific issues: domestic sales have not kept pace with global growth, overseas expansion tests profit margins, and rapid expansion increases cash demand.

Part 1 Sales Hit New Highs, but Growth Relies Increasingly on Overseas Markets

In the third quarter of this year, BYD sold over 400,000 vehicles for three consecutive months: 419,200 units in July, 440,300 units in August, and 463,600 units in September, totaling 1.3231 million units for the quarter, a year-on-year increase of 18.75%.

While revenue declined by 7.13% in the first half of the year, Q3 revenue recovered double-digit growth, demonstrating that scale recovery has a significant positive impact on profits.

The source of the 1.32 million unit growth clearly shifted from domestic to international markets. From July to September, BYD's exports reached 180,500, 189,500, and 180,700 units respectively, totaling 550,700 units, a substantial year-on-year increase of 136.6%, approximately 317,900 more units exported than during the same period last year.

BYD's total NEV (New Energy Vehicle) sales increased by only about 208,900 units, while domestic sales actually decreased by about 109,000 units, a year-on-year drop of approximately 12.4%.

Exports accounted for 41.6% of total Q3 sales, contributing new volume while filling the gap left by the domestic market.

In the past, BYD relied on the scale advantage of the Chinese market to suppress costs; now, overseas markets have become the primary engine for sales growth, while domestic pressure remains.

Product structure is also evolving based on domestic demand.

◎ In Q3, pure electric passenger vehicle sales were approximately 762,500 units, a year-on-year increase of 30.9%; plug-in hybrid passenger vehicle sales were approximately 538,700 units, an increase of only 3.0%.

◎ For the first three quarters, cumulative pure electric sales were 1.63 million units, a year-on-year increase of 1.5%; cumulative plug-in hybrid sales were 1.449 million units, a year-on-year decrease of 10.2%. Pure electric recovery is faster, while plug-in hybrids have not yet exited their annual cumulative decline.

In Q3, the group's average revenue per vehicle was approximately CNY 133,000, which was CNY 2,700 less than the Q2 estimate. The estimated gross margin for the automotive business was 21.5%, down 1.5 percentage points from the Q2 estimate of 23%.

Overseas expansion brings a second layer of anxiety: although overseas sales are high, the model mix, pricing, taxes, and distribution systems vary significantly across Europe, Latin America, and Southeast Asia. New markets require investment in channels, freight, marketing, and after-sales services. Intensifying competition may also drive down end-user prices. The longer the sales radius, the longer the cash conversion cycle.

In the first half of the year, overseas operating revenue was CNY 181.268 billion, a year-on-year increase of 33.92%, accounting for 52.57% of the group's total revenue; meanwhile, domestic revenue decreased by 30.68%.

Domestically, maintaining market share requires technology upgrades, product refreshes, and price competition; overseas, continuous investment in channels and capacity is necessary.

Part 2 Profits Return to CNY 10 Billion, but More Capital Is Tied Up in Expansion

Q3 net profit attributable to shareholders of CNY 10.020 billion showed clear improvement compared to CNY 7.823 billion in the same period last year. After deducting non-recurring gains and losses, net profit attributable to shareholders was CNY 8.630 billion, a difference of CNY 1.389 billion, with government subsidies and fair value changes contributing part of the gap.

In Q3, the group's gross profit was approximately CNY 39.887 billion, with a gross margin of 18.01%, lower than the approximately 18.85% in the first half of the year. Profit growth outpaced revenue growth, yet the gross margin did not rise accordingly. Cost control and non-recurring items remain critical factors.

R&D expenses for the first three quarters were CNY 36.277 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 17.1% from CNY 43.748 billion in the same period last year; looking at Q3 alone, R&D expenses were approximately CNY 12.970 billion, a year-on-year decrease of about 8.4%. While R&D expenses and R&D investment differ in scope (the former being an income statement item), the reduction in expenses supports profit recovery.

Currency exchange rates are eroding some operational results. Financial expenses for the first three quarters were CNY 7.368 billion, whereas there was a net gain of CNY 2.936 billion in the same period last year, resulting in a swing of approximately CNY 10.304 billion. The financial report attributes the main cause to foreign exchange gains turning into losses.

As BYD expands operations in more countries, revenues are settled in multiple currencies, causing exchange rate fluctuations to directly impact the income statement. Non-recurring adjusted net profit attributable to shareholders grew by 2.51% year-on-year in the first three quarters, while statutory net profit attributable to shareholders dropped by 4.24%.

Currently, BYD's profitability relies heavily on exports. The estimated profit per exported vehicle is CNY 12,500, compared to only CNY 3,500 domestically. In 2027, the export tax rebate for NEVs will decrease from 13% to 9%. Additionally, EU quotas for Chinese plug-in hybrids may be limited to 350,000 units, and similar restrictions could emerge in the UK.

More subtle than profit margins is the capital tied up in the balance sheet.

As of the end of September, inventory stood at CNY221.578 billion, an increase of CNY 83.157 billion or 60.1% compared to the end of 2025; accounts receivable were CNY 56.473 billion, an increase of CNY 19.468 billion or 52.6% compared to the beginning of the year. Together, these two items increased by approximately CNY 102.6 billion.

The Q3 report states that this growth is related to the expansion of the overseas automotive business. Inventory includes finished vehicles, batteries, components, and electronic products, indicating that capital occupation in production, transportation, and channels is rising rapidly.

A vehicle must go through multiple settlement stages from leaving the assembly line, loading onto ships, arriving at ports, entering the dealer network, to delivery and payment collection. New markets require pre-stocking, after-sales service necessitates building spare parts warehouses, and overseas local factories require upfront investment before waiting for capacity ramp-up.

Sales can grow rapidly within a single quarter, but cash takes a longer path to return. This is the root cause of the sharply increased management difficulty following the expansion of overseas scale.

Net cash flow from operating activities for the first three quarters was CNY 54.470 billion, a year-on-year increase of 33.36%. The improvement is primarily attributed to reduced cash payments for purchasing goods and receiving services.

Cash paid for the construction of fixed assets, intangible assets, and other long-term assets reached CNY 87.379 billion in the first three quarters. Subtracting this expenditure from operating cash flow results in a simplified post-capital-expenditure cash deficit of approximately negative CNY 32.909 billion.

In Q3, net operating cash inflow was approximately CNY 17.135 billion, while cash paid for constructing long-term assets was approximately CNY 42.676 billion. With CNY 10 billion in net profit attributable to shareholders, the cash expenditure on long-term asset investment was 4.3 times the profit, requiring coverage from existing funds, financing, and other arrangements.

By the end of September, notes payable rose from CNY 22.464 billion at the beginning of the year to CNY 78.863 billion, an increase of approximately CNY 56.4 billion; contract liabilities rose from CNY 51.471 billion to CNY 92.946 billion, an increase of approximately CNY 41.5 billion, mainly due to increased advance payments for the automotive business.

This year's sales forecast stands at 4.64 million units, with 1.9 million units in overseas exports, a commendable achievement.

The area of concern lies in the fact that the domestic market size is likely capped at around 18 million units. If export restrictions occur, where will BYD's long-term growth come from? This is worth exploring together.

Summary

With a net profit of CNY 10 billion in Q3, BYD demonstrates the best scale and cost control capabilities in China.

BYD is transitioning from "Chinese Production, Global Sales" to a stage of "Global Channels, Global Capacity, and Global Settlement." As growth potential expands, operational complexity increases exponentially.
