Automotive Mini LED Becomes New Growth Engine for MLED Industry Amid Rapid Vehicle Adoption

by hangjiashuoDisplay·July 27, 2026

The automotive market is accelerating its rise, becoming a new engine for the growth of the MLED industry.

This judgment is being validated by the sales curve. Data from SayInsight Research shows that the sales of vehicles equipped with Mini LED technology have exhibited clear exponential growth: from merely 64,000 units in 2022 to breaking the million mark in 2025, reaching 1.001 million units. As of the first half of 2026, annual sales have already approached 550,000 units. As technology trickles down and new models are continuously launched, market expansion is still accelerating.

Driving this acceleration are two simultaneous structural shifts in Mini LED automotive applications: the technology is accelerating its penetration into mid-to-low-end vehicle models, and it is evolving from a high-end differentiating feature into foundational hardware for the intelligent cockpit.

The Most Critical Signal in 2026: Downward Price Penetration

SayInsight Research has found that the experience upgrade of the intelligent cockpit has become a key factor in the differentiated competition among automakers. Driven by the rigid demand for larger, multi-screen, and high-definition displays, Mini LED precisely meets the stringent automotive-grade standards with its technical advantages such as high contrast ratio, high reliability, and fine local dimming. Currently, this technology has trickled down from high-end models to the mainstream mid-to-high-end price range of 200,000 to 450,000 RMB, and is accelerating its penetration into mid-to-low-end models. The market path is becoming increasingly clear, and the certainty has significantly strengthened. Between 2022 and 2026, more than 35 models from 16 automotive brands have adopted Mini LED backlight technology; among them, 10 new models in 2026 are equipped with Mini LED automotive displays (9 officially launched and 1 pending launch).

From a pricing perspective, the previous research views of SayInsight Research have also been validated by the market, establishing the major trend of Mini LED technology penetrating into mid-to-low-end models. As shown in the figure above, the starting price of the Arcfox Wendao V9 equipped with a Mini LED configuration has entered the 194,800 RMB range. The consumer perception of this figure might be limited, but its industrial significance is clear: it marks the official breakthrough of Mini LED automotive displays through the "popularization threshold" of 200,000 RMB.

Overall, the 300,000 to 400,000 RMB range remains the main shipment volume for Mini LED automotive displays, but a bidirectional expansion pattern has formed: downward, the 200,000 to 300,000 RMB range is starting to see volume growth; upward, the 450,000 to 600,000 RMB range is pulling up the average selling price through multi-screen and larger-size configurations; the 200,000 to 600,000 RMB price band has been fully covered by Mini LED.

Deducting from the supply chain, the substantial downward penetration of the price band to under 200,000 RMB implies that at least two things are simultaneously true: first, the BOM cost of the backlight module has fallen into the acceptable range for automakers; second, the yield rate and capacity ramp-up are sufficient to support annual shipments at the million-unit level. Improvement in a single condition will not cause a shift in the price band; only the resonance of both conditions will.

Redefining the Role of Screens: From Single-Point Differentiated Selling Points to Cockpit Infrastructure

In addition to price changes, the screen configurations of newly launched models in 2026 exhibit several obvious structural changes:

First, the upgrade of the central control screen size from 15.6 inches to 17.3 inches has become a mainstream trend, and 21.4-inch screens are also beginning to appear.

Second, the adoption rate of passenger screens and rear-seat screens has significantly increased, and multi-screen configurations are no longer exclusive to high-end models.

Third, the emergence of NIO's 48-inch Sky Screen marks the transition of the "integrated large screen" from concept to mass production.

The role is thus reset: three years ago, Mini LED automotive displays were a differentiating label for NEVs (New Energy Vehicles); in 2026, it has become the foundational display layer of the intelligent cockpit. In models priced above 300,000 RMB, 3 to 4 Mini LED screens per vehicle are becoming a "hidden standard." For the supply chain, the impact is direct and clear. As Mini LED automotive displays enter the volume ramp-up stage, the logic of competition is switching: pricing power is giving way to delivery capability, and capacity elasticity and quality controllability are gradually becoming hard indicators for screening suppliers.

Automotive Mini LED Ushers in a Golden Ramp-Up Period: How Will the Supply Chain Evolve?

As Mini LED evolves from an "optional highlight" to the "cockpit base," the shift in supply chain competition logic itself releases a clear signal: automotive MLED has passed the early-adopter phase and entered a deterministic volume ramp-up channel. However, volume growth does not equal complete penetration.

Calculations by SayInsight Research show that the nearly 550,000 units of Mini LED vehicle sales in the first half of 2026 still correspond to a penetration rate of less than 5% in the annual passenger vehicle market. This set of figures implies that two things are simultaneously true: on the one hand, the inflection point for scale has been confirmed, and OEMs' product definitions and supply chain systems no longer treat it as an experimental technology; on the other hand, the 95% market gap may constitute a golden window period for the supply chain over the next 3 to 5 years. The differentiation of technology routes is accelerating.

After two years of rapid popularization, white light Mini LED backlighting has shown pressure from homogenization. Relying on its inherent advantages of wide color gamut and high contrast ratio, RGB Mini LED has become the next differentiated breakthrough for high-end cockpits. Currently, leading manufacturers in the industry chain have initiated the verification and introduction of automotive-grade RGB solutions. Once the costs fall into the acceptable range for OEMs, the competitive landscape of the high-end market has the potential to be reshaped.

Against this backdrop, to further deeply explore the future development trends of the MLED automotive market and clarify the current real commercialization implementation process, on September 8, 2026, SayInsight Display will host the annual grand event ["Mini LED Backlight Image Quality Advancement and Micro AR Glasses Trend Analysis Conference"].
